What Does a Dialysis Technician Do?

Dialysis Technicians play a critical role in providing life-sustaining treatment for patients with kidney failure. Working under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses, they are responsible for operating kidney dialysis machines, preparing dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, and maintaining equipment.  

Key responsibilities of a Dialysis Technician may include: 

  • Machine Operation: Operating and monitoring kidney dialysis machines.  
  • Equipment Management: Preparing dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, and maintaining/repairing equipment.  
  • Patient Monitoring: Monitoring and recording vital signs during dialysis procedures. 
  • Medication Administration: Administering local anesthetics and drugs as needed.  
  • Emergency Preparedness: Assessing patients for complications and being ready to take necessary emergency measures.  
  • Patient Support: Providing emotional support and potentially training patients for at-home dialysis.
